Watch The National Pay Tribute to Tom Petty with Intimate Rendition of “Damaged by Love”

Tom Petty’s death earlier this week marked a sad occasion for the music world as a real legend was lost long before his time. Petty’s music touched so many people by virtue of its good-natured and wise simplicity, which included some beautiful lyrics and unforgettable melodies.

Tributes have been pouring in for the songwriter since the news broke and have included performances of his classics by Wilco and Coldplay, as well as touching words shared by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Ryan Adams, and Lorde.

Today The National shared their own tribute with a touching performance of Petty’s “Damaged by Love” from his 2006 album Highway Companion. In a video posted via Bryce Dessner’s Instagram account, Dessner and Matt Berninger can be seen performing the cover, while a second video shows Berninger jamming to the original.
